The festival commemorates the Vamana avatar of Vishnu and the subsequent homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali. It falls during the month of
Chingam (August–September) and lasts for ten days starting on Atham and ending on Thiruvonam.
On this auspicious occasion Grand Mercure brings a special Onam sandhya lunch comprising of delicacies like Kohzi rasam, Kossambari, Kozhi varuval salad, Vendaikkai puli kozhambu, Chicken chettinad, and Elaneeer paysam to bring in the authentic flavours of Kerela's cuisine.
The festival of Onam is marked by various festivities, including intricate flower carpets; elaborate banquet lunches, snake boat races, Onappottan, Kaazhchakkula in Guruvayoor, Puli Kali, and Kaikottikkali.
