SH Raza’s Bhoomi Breaks Record For The Most Expensive Painting

AstaGuru successfully concluded its 5th Modern and Contemporary Art Auction and its 14th overall online auction by raising INR 20 crores with some of the biggest artists in the country go under the hammer.

The highlight of the two day sale was the cover lot titled ‘Bhoomi’ by S.H Raza, which went for a staggering price of
INR 5.3 crores (inclusive of buyers premium), setting a record for the most expensive painting sold by AstaGuru in an online auction. In this stunning lot, one sees S.H Raza moving away towards various expressions and modulations of abstract and geometric forms.

The canvas depicts a form of its own, containing all the essential requisites of line, tone, colour, texture and space. The next highest bid went for M.F Husain’s artwork titled “AGAR FIRDAUS, BUR RUÉ ZAMEEN AST, HAMÉI AST, VA HAMÉI AST, VA HAMÉI AST” which he painted for the main entrance arch leading to the Indian Trade Fair in Caracas in the late 1980’s. It was estimated at INR 1,50,00,000 – 2,50,00,000 but went for a hammer price of INR 1,83,67,800 (inclusive of buyers premium).

It wasn’t just AstaGuru breaking records but also Anjolie Ela Menon who witnessed one of her works achieve the highest hammer price in any given auction. AstaGuru had displayed Anjolie’s signature 'Jharokha' which was estimated at INR 60,00,000 – 80,00,000, however it went under the hammer for a whopping record price of INR 88,90,015 (inclusive of buyers premium).

Approximately 77% of the lots were sold in the auction with 4 lots selling for more than a crore.
