RSS’s Dattatreya Pays Tribute to Raj Darbhanga’s Enduring Legacy at National Seminar

In a distinguished national seminar held in the capital, the timeless contributions of Raj Darbhanga to India’s spiritual, cultural, and nation-building journey were brought into sharp focus. Titled “Contribution of Raj Darbhanga in the Spiritual, Cultural and Nation-Building of India”, the event convened eminent scholars, policymakers, and cultural leaders to honour the royal family's pivotal role across generations.

A significant historical reference was made to Maharaja Kameshwar Singh of Darbhanga, whose legal challenge to the Bihar Land Reforms Act led to its annulment by the Patna High Court. This ultimately prompted the Nehru government to introduce the First Constitutional Amendment in 1951 to protect land reform laws from judicial review—marking a turning point in post-independence Indian legal history.

A Gathering of Eminent Voices

The seminar was graced by RSS General Secretary Shri Dattatreya Hosabale and Union Minister Shri Bhupender Yadav. Both highlighted the immense and often under-recognized role of the Darbhanga royal family in nurturing India’s cultural and educational institutions, safeguarding Sanatan Dharma, and serving the public good through philanthropy and visionary leadership.

The event also witnessed the official release of the book “Raj Darbhanga: Dharma Sanrakshan se Lok Kalyan” by renowned author Shri Tejakar Jha, chronicling the dynasty’s long-standing commitment to spiritual and social upliftment. Significantly, the seminar coincided with the 18th birthday of Kumar Arihant Singh, the youngest heir to the Darbhanga royal lineage—adding a symbolic note of continuity to the proceedings.

RSS’s Salute to Royal Service
In his keynote address, Shri Dattatreya Hosabale lauded the rulers of Raj Darbhanga for their unwavering commitment to the preservation of India’s sacred traditions, temples, and centers of learning—especially during colonial times when such institutions faced existential threats.

He observed, “Unlike in Europe, where monarchs are often seen as symbols of luxury and oppression, Indian kings—including those of Darbhanga—were viewed as divine stewards, influenced by the ideals of Lord Ram, Raja Janak, and Harishchandra. Their lives were dedicated to public welfare, righteousness, and dharma.”

Government’s Commitment to Reviving Mithila’s Heritage
Union Minister Shri Bhupender Yadav reaffirmed the central government’s commitment to restoring the cultural, educational, and spiritual prominence of Mithila and Bihar. Drawing upon his personal connection to the region, he remarked, “Since the time of Raja Janak, Mithila has been a cradle of wisdom and spiritual thought. The Darbhanga royals played an unmatched role in sustaining this legacy and infusing it into the broader Indian ethos.”

Royal Family’s Continued Commitment to Philanthropy

Speaking on behalf of the Darbhanga family, Kumar Kapileshwar Singh emphasized their ongoing work through various trusts focused on education, healthcare, heritage conservation, and cultural revival. He stated, “It is a matter of great pride to belong to a family that has consistently placed service above all. With your blessings and guidance, we are committed to carrying this legacy forward with integrity and purpose.”

Legacy of Raj Darbhanga
Once one of the largest zamindari estates under British rule, Raj Darbhanga left a deep and lasting imprint on India’s cultural and spiritual landscape. Their efforts in temple restoration, promotion of the Maithili language, establishment of educational institutions, and preservation of Sanatan Dharma continue to inspire generations. Through their unique blend of tradition and vision, the Darbhanga royals helped shape the soul of modern India.
