TREKKING IN THE MAGICAL SHOLAS
As we started trekking from the forest checkpoint, the dense forest engulfed us fully. By 11 am, we were immersed in its beauty. In the dusky forest sunlight filtered through the trees and scattered. Towering trees with giant roots stretched over the jungle floor, in the soft and soggy mud roots was giving us the grip to walk through. I was fully looking how the roots embracing massive rocks. It was a beautiful sight, like nature's own love story. The trees and rocks seemed to care for each other, and it felt magical.
As we journeyed on, a gentle drizzle began to fall, and we found ourselves mesmerized by the vibrant flora that lined our path. Butterflies flitted about, their colourful wings dancing in the misty air. The serene atmosphere was calming to watch. Throughout the journey, the sweet melodies of chirping birds filled the air, accompanied by the gentle rustling of leaves and the soothing gurgle of the stream, creating a symphony of sounds that harmonized with every step I took.
After trekking through the lush forests, we entered a new landscape of meadows and grasslands. Unfortunately, it brought us face-to-face with leeches, which latched onto our skin. To remove them, someone applied salt, causing the leeches to release their grip and fall off. We walked through the grasslands and spotted wild elephants and boars and to note you should have enough luck to spot these. Ranipuram is a habitat for diverse flora and fauna. People get a chance to get a glimpse elephants also various birds like Grey Hornbill, Malabar Trogon, and Orange Headed Trush and various snake species such as shield tails, Malabar Pit vipers and king cobras can be spotted here.
Exhausted and panting, we saw a small stream where crystal clear water flowed. We were parched, and I gulped down handfuls of the refreshing water. It was incredibly sweet and felt like nature's nectar. Finally, after a long trek, we reached the hilltop and were rewarded with a breathtaking view of Paanathur village. The picturesque landscape was stunning, and the scenery was truly amazing. The excitement of reaching there is an unforgettable experience.
After the check post, you will find home cooked food options. Snacks like lime juice and buttermilk are also available near the viewpoint and forest watch house. We had nice home cooked meals and left.
As I left Ranipuram, I felt refreshed and at peace. The trek was challenging, but the stunning views and warm welcome made it all worth it. There is a saying, "Go to the woods for peace," and I totally get it now. Ranipuram, you have stolen my heart cannot wait to come back!
