ZUMBA CONTROVERSY IN KERALA: MUSLIM GROUP CALLS IT ‘’AGAINST VALUES’’

The Kerala government's initiative to introduce Zumba dance in schools as part of its anti-drug campaign has sparked controversy among some Muslim groups. They argue that the dance form goes against moral

values and Islamic principles, particularly regarding modesty and gender interaction.

REASONS BEHIND CONTROVERSY

The controversy surrounding Zumba in Kerala's schools stems from concerns raised by Islamic organizations that the dance form goes against moral values and Islamic principles. Specifically, they object to the mixed-gender nature of Zumba classes, citing it as un-Islamic and expressing worries about the potential for impropriety. Additionally, some groups believe that dance and music are inherently un-Islamic and constitute a form of cultural Westernization that undermines traditional values. The attire typically worn during Zumba classes is also seen as immodest, further fueling the objections. These concerns have led to protests and calls for the program's removal from schools.

GOVERNMENT’S STANCE
The Kerala government, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, has defended its decision to introduce Zumba in schools. General Education Minister V Sivankutty emphasized that Zumba is a nationally recognized sport with lakhs participating across the country, dismissing criticism and warning against giving a communal color to educational activities.

PROTESTS AND REACTIONS
Islamic organizations, including the Samastha Kerala Sunni Yuvajana Sangham (SYS), have protested against the introduction of Zumba in schools. SYS state secretary Abdussamad Pookkottur claimed that Zumba dance is against moral values and urged parents to think critically about the program.
