E-Rickshaws Drive India’s EV Boom as Battery Tech Fuels Growth

India’s electric mobility transition is being led not just by passenger vehicles, but by the rapid rise of e-rickshaws across cities and towns. With over 18.1 lakh registered e-rickshaws, the segment has become

the country’s largest and most widely adopted EV category, playing a crucial role in last-mile connectivity and daily commuting needs.

Unlike other emerging EV segments, electric three-wheelers have already achieved strong on-ground adoption due to their affordability and efficiency. The market, valued at around USD 1.55 billion in 2025, is expected to see significant growth as demand rises for low-cost and low-emission transport solutions.

Battery technology remains central to this expansion, directly impacting vehicle performance, reliability and driver earnings. Companies like Trontek are playing a key role, with their battery systems powering over 5 lakh e-rickshaws across major states. Their lithium batteries, offering over 3000 charge cycles, significantly outperform traditional lead-acid alternatives, reducing long-term costs for drivers.

“India’s e-rickshaw ecosystem shows how electric mobility can scale rapidly when technology aligns with real economic needs,” said Samrath S. Kochar, Founder & CEO, Trontek. “For drivers, reliability is everything. A battery is not just a component of the vehicle - it is the foundation of their livelihood. When batteries deliver longer life, consistent performance and stronger safety, it improves vehicle uptime and driver income at the same time. At Trontek, our focus has been to engineer battery systems that are built specifically for Indian operating conditions. As the e-rickshaw ecosystem continues to grow, strengthening battery technology will be critical to sustaining this momentum and supporting the next phase of electric mobility adoption.”

Beyond mobility, the sector has also become a major source of livelihood, especially in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. As India pushes toward cleaner transport, e-rickshaws and evolving battery technologies are expected to remain at the heart of its EV growth story.
